PBS re-broadcasts THE GOOD WAR AND THOSE WHO REFUSED TO FIGHT IT
October 3rd, 2007

THE GOOD WAR AND THOSE WHO REFUSED TO FIGHT IT is the story of 40,000 Americans who refused to shoulder weapons in "the good war" because their conscience wouldn't allow them to kill another human being.  In the face of criticism and scorn, these CO's challenged the limits of democracy and applied their non-violence to pioneer social movements that transformed America in the years to follow.

Beginning on October 4 at 10 p.m., PBS  for the second time, nationally broadcasts the award-winning documentary on the conscientious objectors of WWII, narrated by Ed Asner. This is the untold story of WWII conscientious objectors who refused to fight and tested the limits of religious freedom during wartime, as told by Judith Ehrlich and Rick Tejada-Flores won both major US history awards in 2003.

CCW has a special role in this documentary; although not referred to by name, the organization referred to as lobbying and advocating for the creation of an Alternative Service program is NSBRO, an older incarnation of our organization.

Because the original broadcast followed on the heels of September 11th, 2001, it was largely pushed to later time slots or not screened on many PBS stations. It is possible that your local PBS station did not air this amidst the political climate of September 11th, 2001, so be sure not to miss it this time around. Even if you have seen it before, it may very well be worth revisiting such a highly acclaimed and prestigious historical documentary of a uniquely American struggle for religious freedom.
